Search engine optimization

Today, a significant proportion of the older generation can use search systems, whether it’s a recipe for Sunday soup or a specific product. Google is the most popular search engine in the world (and the most visited website in the world), partly because the results are very often in the order that the person searching expects. The results can and do vary from user to user, so for a given term, Google is in effect creating a unique list of results for everyone. At present, SEO in Hungary is almost entirely done on Google’s search engine, as it has become the sole search engine in many countries, including our own.

Today, SEO is an indispensable element of the success of an online business, even if you don’t want to spend hundreds of thousands of forints on link building, it would be silly to skip the basic settings, because with a little time and effort you can achieve real results.

Search results in the search engines

Google’s search mechanism is based on the PageRank process, which for a long time measured how many backlinks a website had to a particular page. SEO ranking data is not publicly available, so it is only possible to infer what is important to Google based on information that Google’s experts have gathered. Today, the algorithm takes into account factors other than links, such as:

  • the existence of on-page SEO settings, such as meta descriptions, image alt names, internal links, website link structure, website speed
  • easy to read, understandable, original, and constantly updated content (main and sub-pages of your website, product pages, product categories, blog copy)
  • density and use of keywords/search terms in the website content
  • how often people click on a hit, how long they spend on a particular web page, and the bounce rate
  • branding is the new link, according to many experts, i.e. Google takes into account your company’s name as much as a link to your website
  • comments, product reviews, customer reviews

So, if you want to rank first for a particular search term, it’s up to you to make sure that your website offers the best answer for that topic. This requires excellent content, a technically sound site, a good user experience, and a secure website.

On-page SEO

The order of the results list is therefore based on the SEO factors considered by the algorithms. These can basically be divided into two groups, on-page SEO and off-page SEO.
This includes all factors that you can influence on your own website. This includes the technical details that are essential for Google to consider and rank your website. On-page SEO also includes, among other things:
  • the structure of the website,
  • speed, mobile-friendly design,
  • use of SSL
  • content (quality, freshness),
  • the headings
  • meta description,
  • URL structure,
  • navigation,
  • internal links,
  • H1, H2, etc. lines, formatting,
  • 404 page,
  • images (ALT tag),
  • outbound links,
  • inbound links, etc.

In other words, quite a lot of things, so we won’t list them any further, because you can read about them in detail in our SEO ranking factors section, along with some off-page factors.

Off-page SEO

Aside from on-page SEO, the other big category is the factors that are a little harder to influence, as they are factors outside of your website. The off-page SEO basically comes after the on-page SEO is already in order, i.e. the quality is right from an SEO point of view on your website. A typical off-page SEO factor is external links pointing to your website. The more and better quality these links are, the better your ranking on Google’s results pages.

Off-page SEO is not just about links, however, it actually includes external reactions to your website. To do these well, you need to come up with an excellent “product”, not just “another one” on the market. People will talk about it because you have convinced them of your product. Let’s see what off-page SEO involves:
  • Link building – links to your site can be seen as votes for your website.
  • Social media – not a ranking factor directly, but shares and likes drive your business and will have an impact.
  • Newsletter – it’s worth putting a sign-up option on your website because although it obviously won’t have a large number of subscribers, they will check your site regularly.
  • Comments – You can include your company name alongside relevant and good advice in a comment.
  • Guest blogging – Here again, links and ad-flavored content would not be the point. However, good-quality content can include a link or two.
  • Use of forums – as above, you can mention your company in forum posts, but it is not advisable to do so forcefully.
  • Trust-building – this can be done by ensuring transparency, which can be achieved by using useful but not sensationalist titles and empty text.
  • Reviews – another way to build trust is to use user reviews. you can ask your customers to post their reviews of you on the appropriate platforms.
  • Videos and other visuals – you can use these to draw attention to your company, even if you don’t post them on your website. Examples include YouTube and Pinterest.
  • Content sharing – you can use document-sharing sites like Scribd or SlideShare.
  • PR – if anything important happens in-house, put it in a press release. PR materials can help you find new clients.
